Cat Behavior: Why does my cat scratch around his food bowl?

Note from Reader,
Sometimes when I feed my kitty, Lester, he scratches around the bowl.  I’ve noticed that sometimes he will eat the food and then scratch around the bowl.  Other times, I notice he doesn’t eat at all, and just sniffs and scratches… Why is he doing this?

Dear Sam,
Most likely, there are two reasons why Lester is scratching around his food bowl:

1.  If he likes the food, he is trying to bury it for later.  Cats do this because we hope that other cats won’t come by and eat it.  It’s also a survival instinct, as we don’t want to attract other animals.

2.  If he doesn’t like the food, he may be trying to let you know that he disapproves, and is trying to bury it in order to get rid of it so he doesn’t have to see or smell that which is displeasing to him.

I hope that helps!
